“43” - performance/short film, 2021

“Drawing on the sudden death of his father as a teenager, Chris Coffin reflects on his family history and lineage from his grandfather to his father, himself, and his son.  Coffin reflects on the duality of love and disdain, and the toll that abusive relationships  take over a lifetime. Decades of contemplation enables Coffin to find solace in the repetitive act of ringing a simple nautical ship bell, much like the one that hung off his grandfather’s back porch during his childhood in Greenport, Long Island. The symbolic act and sound of its ringing amid a sea of cacophony during a violent Nor’Easter, is the conduit for catharsis, reconciliation, and healing.”

“…It’s basically 43 steps of Catharsis. Through repetition we are able to focus, and through repetition, we sometimes find pain. Through repetition we find solace, and we find predictability, and then we find a way to let things go...”  c.coffin
